Letters to the Editor

I was getting caught up on my taped shows last weekend and was thrilled to see two very powerful and moving coming-out stories on top-rated prime time shows. In all the hype over the gay marriage legal challenges, the process of coming and being out tends to get overlooked. Which in some ways is wonderful, because it means that coming out isn’t so out of the ordinary.   Full Story

I received this letter in my e-mail today and wish to share it with your readers: Letter from Jesus about Christmas: It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season. Maybe you’ve forgotten that I wasn’t actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors who decided to celebrate My birthday   Full Story

A standing ovation for Neil Ellis, owner of the Steeple City Plaza, for his commitment to the city of North Adams and saving us all from driving to Pittsfield to see a movie -- or Williamstown to read a movie. It is the efforts of people like him that secure a better future for this city. Let’s all show our support by going to "our" cinema this weekend, buying a large buttered popcorn   Full Story

On Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, Arthur Desaulnier, president of Eastpoint Properties, announced an agreement with Time Warner Cable. The residents of the 48 apartments at Village East on Union Street in North Adams will finally receive discounted cable service and achieve equality with their Berkshire Housing counterparts.   Full Story

Just a few short weeks ago, the Berkshire Food Project celebrated its 23rd anniversary of providing this community with free meals. I can assure you the founders of the project would be surprised to learn that we are still in operation. Last year alone, we served close to 22,000 meals. We pride ourselves in the quality of food we serve.   Full Story

I recently toured the facilities and observed the students and teachers of the Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter Public School, where my nephew and niece are enrolled. While living in Denver and Washington, D.C., I knew of the trend to establish charter schools as an alternative to the public education experience.   Full Story

Northern Berkshire Healthcare CEO Richard Palmisano states that the organization’s current financial woes are caused by a combination of factors as listed in The Berkshire Eagle [and the Transcript] on Nov. 17. However, when listing these factors, he conveniently leaves out the enormous expenditures by NBH in its attempt to prevent the Sweet Brook employees legitimate right to form a   Full Story

Mr. Patrie, in regard to your recent letter "Throw the bums out," the Webster Dictionary definition of a bum is: a loafer, habitually tardy person, wastes time, idler, vagrant, worthless person, etc. I know that Clark Billings left on his own, and he was not a bum. I will miss him as our city councilor.   Full Story

While all the camaraderie and campaign fever were truly on display, couldn’t these supporters of both candidates have found a better spot to "stump" than a tiny island in the busiest intersection of the city? While driving home at 5 o’clock in the afternoon, it was not an easy task navigating through the crowd that had spilled onto East Main near Subway.   Full Story

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and many Americans are already feeling more frazzled than festive. Much of this holiday stress comes from trying to create the perfect meal. As a dietitian, I want to point out that what you put on the menu actually influences your mood and could help relieve tension.   Full Story

Just a thought on the Hoosac Valley High Web site that was reported in the Nov. 13 issue of the Transcript: Congratulations, Principal Henry Duval. You just gave the computer hackers in Berkshire County something to do -- breaking into the private information of your students. As for the "Web site being protected by a password," I bet the hackers are still laughing about that.   Full Story

Since the Transcript editor is fielding opinions from the Khaleej Times, Dubai, United Arab Emirates ( "Act of despair," editorial, Nov. 13), then perhaps you could return an appropriate reply to the editor of the Khaleej Times. You might tell them when the peaceful Muslims speak out and condemn the bloody senseless killings, as in the first bombing of the World Trade Center in Yemen in 1992,   Full Story

The Adams Friends of Animals "Dress Your Pet" event at the PNA on Nov. 1 was a big success. Thanks to all who took part. Please help with our ongoing bottle drive. Donate at the Adams Redemption Center. Roy Thompson Adams Nov. 10   Full Story

We have heard and read numerous comments in the news media about the four Democrats running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Sen. Kennedy, but we have noticed little about the candidate who is better qualified than any of the others. I am referring to state Sen. Scott Brown of Wrentham, who has been one of our best and most honest legislators on Beacon Hill, and who has served   Full Story

Now that the election is over, I agree it is time to move on and get down to business, but will you please post a story and some pictures of the greatest moment of the 2009 campaign year? I am referring to the Friday before the election during the standout by both parties at the Main Street and Marshal Street corner.   Full Story
