Letters to the Editor

Re: The circus in Dalton As a member of Circus Fans Of America, I asked those leaving, after the performance was over, what they thought of this year’s show. Everyone said they loved it. Comments were also made to me on how well cared for the animals were. Those who had seen the elephants in the pond, on both days, remarked on how much they enjoyed this.   Full Story

The following letter is being sent to all members, Democratic and Republican, of the Senate finance and health committees now considering the health care bill. We will send the same letter to House committee members considering the bill: Nearly 50 million Americans, one in six of us, don’t have health insurance.   Full Story

Let’s be practical. As I watch all the Spring Street construction going on, I wonder if I am the only one dreaming of a good and friendly bakery like the one we used to have in the ‘50s, ‘60s, etc. -- ran by the hard-working Burnett family. Art galleries and fancy restaurants may be great, but a reliable bakery/pastry shop would be a very nice addition.   Full Story

The outrage your readers should be feeling concerning Minuteman Wind’s project in Savoy is that the community’s desire for wind energy projects in their town, as evidenced by a 155 to 56 vote adopting the town’s wind turbine bylaw, continues to be frustrated by opponents who are unwilling to respect civil processes and harass town officials (volunteers all) trying to implement   Full Story

As this is America, your arts columnist has every right to disparage Michael Jackson ["Burying Michael Jackson," Page 1, Transcript, June 27]. There are certainly a number of people on the planet who agree with him, and maybe the five of you can start a club, or something. Similarly, one can certainly opt to focus on Jackson’s troubled past.   Full Story

As the staff partner of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Northern Berkshire, I would like to extend my appreciation to the many individuals who attended and supported this year’s event at Noel Field Athletic Complex in North Adams. More than 900 people participated, helping to raise more than $136,000.   Full Story

Although there are discrepancies in Joe Manning’s letter to the editor [June] relative to my role in the acquiring of the Newberry’s sign, the most important point is that the sign can, must and will be preserved by placing it in the guardianship of the city of North Adams. Mr. Manning has recently informed me that he "would be delighted to donate the letters from the sign to North   Full Story

As a great fan of North Adams and its history, I share Vincent Melito’s concern that he expressed in his letter about the Newberry’s sign [Transcript, June 25], but his recollection of the events regarding my acquisition of the letters from the sign is substantially incorrect. When I learned that the sign was about to come down, I alerted the North Adams Historical Society and   Full Story

Did you know that, when not performing, circus animals travel nearly non-stop up to 12,000 miles a year? Elephants are left chained in filthy, sweltering railroad cars where temperatures often exceed 100 degrees. In the wild, they can roam up to 25 miles per day, but instead they live an unnatural life as circus performers, made to stand painfully on only two legs.   Full Story

A number of citizens have expressed questions relative to the old Newberry sign that once adorned the Newberry’s Store. There is a history of how the sign disappeared and then returned to the city, and it is now my hope that the sign will continue to remain in North Adams. About eight years ago, when I noticed the sign had disappeared, I immediately contacted building owner David Carver,   Full Story

I wish to give my thoughts and prayers to Tanya Record and her fiancé, Brian Baker, on the great thing that is going to happen to these two people -- a kidney transplant. This is a true-life situation to give to your partner. This will be a miracle to both, and it means that they will have a happy healthy life together.   Full Story

The circus is once again coming to our area; signs for it are going up everywhere. I’m writing to strongly urge everyone to boycott this cruelty show! The lives these hapless animals lead are just plain pitiful. If you attend, you are supporting their suffering and teaching your children that this very suffering is OK.   Full Story

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, I would like to raise my concerns regarding the issue of backyard fireworks. All such fireworks are illegal in the state of Massachusetts due to safety concerns. According to Consumer Product Safety Commission reports, fireworks-related injuries rose from 5,700 in 2002 to 9,600 in 2004.   Full Story

I feel God denied Nancy Sommer of "Sommer Hill" and all the grievers of the Cheshire magnolia [letter to the editor, June 5]. They have missed the ability to count their blessings and leave others alone. It’s a shame they don’t try to live more like the Walton family from television’s past family show, "Walton’s Mountain.   Full Story

It was recently reported how some private medical insurance companies have been dropping cancer patients and even pregnant women from their coverage. This should come as no surprise, considering it is well known that decisions on what treatments are covered and who gets covered are ultimately made by people with an eye to making a profit.   Full Story
