SVAC Winter Plein Air Workshop still occurring
MANCHESTER -- The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s planned workshop "Winter Plein Air with Stapleton Kearns -- Design and Color for Outdoor Painting," despite the non-winter-like weather, will be held with or without snowy conditions, on Thursday, March 1 through Saturday, March 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Kearns will lead an outdoor plein air class emphasizing how to create better compositions in your paintings. Learn how to use design to produce more exciting paintings rather than matter-of-fact inventories of the scene before you. Special emphasis will be placed on working effectively and comfortably outside in the winter. Provisions will be made for those with cold feet that need to take a warm up break, and "no one will be expected to freeze for their art!"
Kearns will conduct a morning demo, explaining the methods he has learned in 30 years of painting outside on location. In the afternoon the students will make their own paintings while individual instruction will be given to each of the participants. This class is open to any level of expertise.

Youth singers auditions for OTW’s ‘Noye’s Fludde’
WESTON --
This one-act opera by composer Benjamin Britten is based on a medieval mystery play and tells the story of the Great Flood and Noah’s Ark in song, dance, and drama. The production calls for a large cast of performers including a children’s chorus of animals and birds. The opera will be performed in January 2013.
The company is looking for a total of 30 children aged 10 to 17, including three boy sopranos or three tenors to perform Noye’s sons, three girl sopranos to perform the wives of Noye’s sons, and 24 treble voices for the children’s chorus. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a short, simple excerpt from the opera.

Rotary to offer Four-Way Test speech contest
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs are holding their annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest, where high school students have the opportunity to tell people what they really think and win cash prizes, on Wednesday, March 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library.
Students in grades 9 through 12, living in Arlington, Bennington, North Bennington, Pownal, Shaftsbury, and Woodford are eligible to enter. Home-schooled and exchange students are welcome and encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 speakers: $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd and $100 for 3rd. The first place winner will be eligible for the District competition in April.
The contest is based on the Four-Way Test, a set of values that Rotarians use to set high ethical standards. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: "Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned/? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"
Students choose their own topics, and deliver a short 5 to 7 minute speech on the chosen topic. However, speeches must address the values of The Four-Way Test.
Applications are due by March 8. Applications are available from Mike Molloy at the Mount Anthony Union High School or online at catamountrotary.com and benningtonrotary.com. The entry form includes guidelines, rules and recommendations for the speech, and a copy of the Four-Way Test.

VAE continues new series of classes
NORTH BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Arts Exchange has begun its winter term of community art classes at the Sage Street Mill --and new this year are drumming and yoga sessions. Classes continue through the beginning of April and are designed to meet the interests and abilities of students at all levels, beginners to experts.
New this winter, Flow Yoga with instructor Tracey Forest on Mondays, through April 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Drop-in fee is $15 per class. Also new, Otha Day will be facilitating Hand Drumming Classes on Thursdays, through April 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Drop in fee is $15/class.

Bennington Arts Guild seeks members
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Arts Guild (BAG), a cooperative organization of professional artists from Bennington and the surrounding areas, is actively seeking new members. Juried professional artist members run the gallery two-to-three shifts each month, work on a committee, and attend four mandatory meetings each year.

Year of ‘Dragons’ ideas, artists sought
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce, the Better Bennington Corporation and local artistic leaders are planning to offer the theme "The Year of the Dragons" for all cultural and community events this year. In that spirit, the group is encouraging artists, chefs, galleries and community groups to participate in this grass roots year-long celebration.
