NORTH ADAMS -- A wintry mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet slickened North County roads Monday afternoon, resulting in several accidents in North Adams, Adams and on the Mohawk Trail in Savoy.
The majority of the accidents happened before 4 p.m., when the storm was at its heaviest.
"We've had anywhere from an inch to two inches of snow accumulate," John Hockridge, of New England Weather Associates, said Monday.
Despite a winter weather advisory that remains in effect until 7 a.m., today's temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s.
"It's going to be warming up for the next two days," Hockridge said. "It will be mostly dry [today], with some rain showers in the evening. Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week, when we'll see temperatures around 50 degrees. Unfortunately, the warm temperatures will be accompanied by rain beginning in the evening and continuing into the night. We'll see much colder temperatures for the remainder of the week and on the weekend. The good news is there are no other storms in the picture for the rest of the week."
Drivers weren't as lucky Monday. Calls for mutual aid went out over local scanners at 3:45 p.m., asking emergency personnel to respond to a motor vehicle rollover on Route 2, in Savoy at the Charlemont town line.
According to a spokesman from the Massachusetts State Police, the accident, which involved a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by a 57-year-old man from North
Officers from the State Police Barracks responded to the call. No further information about the driver, road conditions or if charges are pending was available Monday evening.
In North Adams, police responded to a two-car accident on State Road at about 12:45 p.m. The accident, which slowed traffic near Harding Avenue, involved a gray 2005 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Tracy Gardzina, of Veazie Street, and a black 2004 Acura MDX, driven by Robert Colantuono, of Charlene Street.
Specifics about the accident were not immediately available Monday, but according to the police log, at least one individual was taken to North Adams Regional Hospital by the North Adams Ambulance Service.
North Adams Police officers also responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Bradley and Church streets at 4 p.m. While it appears there were no injuries to either driver, according to the police log, a gray 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Daniel Sadlocah, of Beacon Street, and a gray 2003 Saab 9-3 SE driven by Timothy Gilvey, of Seminole Drive, were both towed from the scene.
In Adams, police responded to a two-car accident on Orchard Street at 3:15 p.m. The accident was originally reported as involving three cars.
While few details were available Monday afternoon, Adams Police Officer Michael Wandrei said that three people were taken to the hospital by the Adams Ambulance Service.
Wandrei said the accident involved a gray 2005 Pontiac G6 driven by Luke Kendig, of Dalton, and a 2006 Red Nissan Pathfinder driven by Lindsey Chittenden, of North Adams.
Adams Police also responded to a car that had slid off the road on Buckland Road at 3:37 p.m. Wandrei said the car, a blue 2006 Honda Civic was driven by Ashley Wilcox, of Florida. No injuries were reported.
At around 4:20 p.m. in Lanesborough, 73-year-old Virginia Ford, of Williamstown, was heading west on Brodie Mountain Road when she lost control of her vehicle and slid off the right side of the road, according to Lanesborough Police Sgt. Gary Kirby.
He said Ford was transported to Berkshire Medical Center by Lanesborough ambulance for minor injuries and complaints of back pain.
