ADAMS -- Park Street is getting a taste of country living.
Nonnie's Country Store, which opened in early December, takes the place of The Colonial Country Shoppe at 3 Park St.
Owner Jo Sebastino, of Windsor, who has run the store for seven years at two prior locations, one being in Adams, said she's happy to own a store in the town she grew up in.
"I always liked this store," she said. The Colonial Country Shoppe owner, James Wol, closed his store in November after 17 years of business. The "flatiron" building in the heart of Adams is just steps away from the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail.
Sebastino opened her first store on Summer Street in Adams in 2005. Following a building maintenance issue in 2011, Nonnie's moved to a storefront on North Hoosac Road in Williamstown.
The store's new location has a wide variety of items for sale. Shoppers will find assorted furniture, such as desks, shelves, and tables. Smaller items, such as scented candles, potpourri and incense, are also in stock.
Sebastino also carries hard-to-find snacks, such as candy cigarettes, an item she said is purchased mainly by nostalgic adults.
"They're the ones who remember them," she said. "When they see them, they go crazy."
Sebastino said the storefront is perfect for her because it has a real "country feeling" to it.
"A country store needs to have character," she said.
She pointed out two old dining booths at one
"People asked me, ‘Are you going to take that down?' And I said, no it gives it character."
While in Williamstown, Sebastino carried groceries, and in addition served breakfast and lunch. Though she won't have food in her new location -- she said there were too many regulations to weave through -- Nonnie's will still offer freshly brewed coffee.
In the future, Sebastino hopes to use the new space's second floor. Currently, a spiral staircase leads up from the center of the sales floor, but is blocked off at the ceiling.
"I'd like to have candles and accessories up there, some small shelves," she said. "Nothing big. I'm not carrying big pieces of furniture up there."
In the meantime, the staircase has become something of a focal point, and is used for holding smaller items for sale.
Sebastino identified the location as one of the best parts of the store. Being on the main street means she has a large number of people stopping in to browse. She said she's had all ages stop in to look around.
"We have something for everyone," she said.
