In search of Section 8: NORTH ADAMS -- When the North Adams Housing Authority opened the city's Section 8 voucher waiting list Monday, the response was drastically different than three years ago when more than 100 applicants began arriving at its Ashland Street offices at 4 a.m. -- four hours before it opened its doors.
In 2010, the last time the voucher waiting list was opened, the housing authority processed 1,000 applications -- 700 of which were filed by residents of Springfield, Holyoke and Chicopee.
"Last time we opened up the list, there was a Spanish-language radio station in Holyoke that saw our advertisement and talked about it on-air," Executive Director Jennifer Hohn said. "With the economy the way it is, we expected a similar response, so this time we were prepared -- we brought in two police officers and a translator just in case we needed them. We plan

The look of the election: WILLIAMSTOWN -- With less than a week to go before nomination papers are due for the town election in April, no papers have been taken out for a three-year term on the School Committee, Town Clerk Mary Kennedy said.
In addition, only two candidates have taken out nomination papers for the two, three-year terms on the Board of Selectmen, making it an uncontested race.

Heavy metal: NORTH ADAMS -- Two city men are facing charges after allegedly stealing more than 1,000 pounds of crushed cans from a local grocery store.
According to court documents, Alan G. Schnopps, 45, and Patrick Gaffey, 44, allegedly stole 1,077 pounds of crushed cans, worth approximately $2,700, from Price Chopper Supermarket on State Road over the course of two months. The two men allegedly returned the cans to George Apkin and Sons Inc. as scrap metal, where they received approximately $640.
