CHESHIRE -- A new principal, Vinnie Regan, will take the helm inside a renovated Hoosac Valley High School building this September, after being hired by Adams-Cheshire Regional School District (ACRSD) on Thursday.
According to ACRSD Super intendent Alfred Skrocki, Regan possesses "experience in interaction and collaboration and a lot of the intangible things I'm looking for in moving forward."
"He's a good fit," Skrocki said in an interview Monday. "He has a variety of experiences in his career, not all of them related to just high school administration, but also in regard to the strategic and school improvement initiatives we're planning."
Regan was chosen from a field of eight candidates for the position -- narrowed to three by a district search committee. Skrocki interviewed Regan and one other candidate.
The principal job will be subject to a new dynamic at the renovated high school, expanded to include grades six through eight. Skrocki said it will now consist of "being part of an administrative team with two assistant principals" and feature administrative, disciplinary and curricular responsibilities.
Regan, a Lanesborough native, said he's "ecstatic" and "excited to come home."
"It's a great opportunity, especially with the new school," Regan said. "I think the biggest thing is really utilizing the available professional learning capacities and the teachers. If we can get the right people at the table,
Regan has career experience as a history and special education teacher and an administrator. He's currently an assistant principal at Ashland Public Schools, but he began teaching at Hillcrest Educational Center before continuing on to Revere Public Schools from there.
Among his experience, Regan counts "standards-based teaching and learning" and "quality improvement initiatives."
"I've been exposed to a new approach in education and I'm hoping to bring it to Adams and Cheshire," Regan said. "The other big thing is going to be to bring in more technological components, which the new school is going to have. The more tools you have, the better the approach."
The principal spot was posted after Henry Duval, Hoosac Valley's principal of eight years, decided back in March to step down to one of the assistant principal roles next year.
Regan hopes to help shepherd in the new Race to the Top (RTTT) changes, laid out in legislation of the same name adopted nationwide in 2009. Primary RTTT focal points include teacher evaluation, broader use of technology and modernized curriculums.
