WILLIAMSTOWN - The Harrison Gallery will present a show of landscape paintings by John MacDonald and photographs by Paul Caponigro from July 7 through 31.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

In addition to his career as a landscape painter, MacDonald works as a commercial illustrator with corporate clients throughout the country. He has been a member of the prestigious Society of Illustrators, as well as the Illustrators Partnership of America and the Graphic Artists Guild.

MacDonald has staked out the Berkshires as his favorite terrain, painting portraits of the area as it appears in all seasons. He approaches his work from the perspective of a "formalist," an artist who focuses on the visual components of an artwork - colors and hues, shapes and shadows, lines and forms - rather than the subject itself.

Caponigro's photographs sit in the collections of all major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Caponigro uses traditional photographic materials and darkroom techniques: film and darkroom. He develops his own negative and prints using the silver gelatin process. He mixes different types of chemicals and paper to achieve his velvety blacks, crisp details of light or its atmospheric effects. The Harrison Gallery is at 39 Spring St.

Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, from 11
