LANESBOROUGH -- An elderly couple from Sharon escaped serious injury after their car plunged over an embankment off Rockwell Road on Mount Greylock Reservation on Wednesday evening.
Robert Richmond, 86, and his wife, Harriet, 85, were traveling up the mountain shortly after 7 p.m. when the husband lost control of his vehicle, according to state police from the Cheshire barracks. Troopers say the 2002 Toyota Camry skidded off the road and slid 48 feet below the road.
State police, Lanesborough police and fire departments spent 20 minutes searching for the Richmonds, when they heard Robert honking the car horn.
Rescuers extricated both people from the wreckage, hauled them up to the road and took them to Berkshire Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. BMC officials listed both the husband and wife in stable condition.
The accident remains under investigation.
