CHESHIRE -- The Berkshire County tactical squad was called into duty Saturday afternoon after an armed man threatening to harm himself parked his black Lincoln in a Cheshire cemetery.

According to Pittsfield Police Sgt. James Roccabruna, Andrew Apple, 27, of Pittsfield, never threatened anyone but himself. His girlfriend called police at 4:20 p.m. and reported that he had driven away with a handgun with the possible intention to shoot himself.

After a "be on the look out" alert was issued, Apple’s car was spotted by police parked in the cemetery in Cheshire at 5:20 p.m., where he was soon surrounded by police from Pittsfield, Cheshire, the Massachusetts State Police, the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Department, and the Berkshire County Special Response Team.

Roccabruna said that Pittsfield Police Officer Dale Eason did a good job negotiating with Apple, who eventually exited the car, dropped the weapon and was arrested at 6:45 p.m.

He is being held in Pittsfield on several charges, including larceny of a firearm, and illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.
