PITTSFIELD -- Berkshire County is under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. A watch doesn't mean a tornado is imminent, but that conditions are favorable for one.
In addition, the NWS issued a special weather statement for severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts Thursday afternoon. Western Massachusetts, southeastern New York and Connecticut are included in the advisory.
The thunderstorms are expected to move from west to east at around 40 miles per hour.
In addition to damaging wind gusts, the storms are expected to bring large hail and isolated tornadoes to Berkshire County. The greatest threat appears to be south of New York's Capital Region.
The threat of storms will be greatest between 5 p.m. and midnight.
