50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- As the result of the Berkshire County 4-H vegetable judging contest, several area youngsters were selected to be on the county team which will compete in the state-wide 4-H vegetable judging contest which will be held in Waltham on Aug. 21. On the senior team are Marilyn Willi ams, Dean Swift and David Zappula, of Florida, and Lind say Williams, of Adams. On the junior team will be Susan Zap pula and Einar Oleson Jr., of Florida, and Lila Williams, of Adams. NORTH ADAMS -- Two high school students from North Adams have been select ed to be among the honored bursts at the centennial dinner to be held for Amos Alonzo Stagg at Springfield College on Aug. 16. Richard Faille, a senior at St. Joseph High School and son of Francis Faille, of 164 North St., and Michael Gamari, a junior at Drury High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Gamari of 84 Francis St., will join 98 other boys at the head table for the event on the date of the 100th birthday of the famous coach.

25 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Kevin Aubin struck out 12 batters and allowed just five hits as Berkshire Optical beat the Elks, 13-2 in Schouler League baseball. Aubin was also the top hitter for Optical as he collected two doubles. Mark Mroz added a double and a single and Jim Barbuto had two singles. For the Elks, Dan Harrison and Chris George had two hits each.

beat Lee Youth Association 66-56 in the first round of the boys’ division of the Youth Center Basketball Classic. John Mulcahy was the high scorer for Altiere’s with 25 points to lead his team to victory. Chad Chenail added 21 points. For Lee, Chris Unsworth was the high scorer with 23 points.

10 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- In A Division Men’s Softball League play, Key West beat Tatro Contracting, 21-6. For Key West, Karl Belouin went 3-for-3 with two home runs. Scott Demarsico and Kevin Holland went 4-for-4. One of Holland’s was a homer. Mike Flores had three hits, including a homer. For Tatro, Leon Thomas had two homers.

NORTH ADAMS -- In North Adams Men’s Basketball League play, Adams Specialty beat H.A. George, 69-57. High scorer for Adams Specialty was Joel DeMarco with 16 points, Jason Hayer with 12 and Dean Dagnoli chipped in with 11. For HA George, Brian Truskowski scored 14 points while John Cardinal netted 10.
