BENNINGTON, Vt. -- An accident involving a motorcycle shut down traffic along Route 9 East for about an hour Friday, but no serious injuries were reported as a result.

The initial call came in to police at approximately 11:26 a.m. Bennington Police Cpl. Christopher Lauzon said the motorcyclist had been traveling eastward along Route 9 when he lost control and dropped the motorcycle in the roadway at the intersection with Barney Road.

The motorcyclist was identified as Keith Hartman, 64, of North Adams, Mass. Lauzon said Hartman did not collide with another vehicle, but may have thought he was about to and lost control as a result.

A Honda sedan remained at the intersection on Barney Road while the scene was cleared Friday morning, but Lauzon said he had no information that the vehicle had attempted to pull out. The incident remains under investigation but speed does not appear to be a factor.

A wrecker was called for the motorcycle. Hartman was conscious and alert when first responders arrived, and was subsequently transported by Bennington Rescue to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries to his feet. Traffic was backed up in both directions until the scene was cleared about an hour after the call came in. "We tried to clean up as fast as we could," Lauzon said.
