50 years ago today

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The School Committee last night appointed a new elementary school teacher. Appointed to teach fifth-grade classes in the Grant School Annex was E. Doris Caron, an elementary school teacher in Stamford, Vt., for the past seven years. Miss Caron, a 1937 graduate of North Adams State College, will assume her new teaching duties Sept. 5. NORTH ADAMS -- Pfc. William Shephard, 17, son of Mrs. Phyllis Shephard of 2 Granite St., has arrived home on a 13-day leave following completion of his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. He enlisted in the Army June 24 and will return to Fort Dix Sept. 7 for further training.

NORTH ADAMS -- Two Drury Senior High School home economics teachers were among the 125 educators who attended the third annual In-Service Education Seminar held Aug. 12 and 13 at the 4-H Center in Ashland. Pauline Cantone and Janet Woodruff participated in the "networking, sharing, and workshops" over the two days.

ADAMS -- Doric Dagnoli, son of Donato and Marcia Dagnoli of 63 Orchard St., has completed a U.S. Air Force ROTC field training encampment at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. Field training, attended by cadets normally between their second and third year of college, gives an opportunity to evaluate each student’s potential as an officer. Dagnoli is a student at Norwich University in Northfield,

NORTH ADAMS -- Air Force Airman Chad Miller, son of Robin Miller of 55 Charlene St., has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs, and received special training in human relations. Miller is a 2000 graduate of McCann Technical High School.

NORTH ADAMS -- The 13th Annual Chocolate Bowl Race took place Wednesday. A total of 60 boats participated in this race which vies for coveted prizes of Catherine’s Chocolates. Local participants were Jim Dami of North Adams who finished first overall, Will Patle of Cheshire finished fifth and Fred Thompson of North Adams was third in the Senior division.
