ADAMS -- The town’s newest business, a recently-constructed Dollar General, at 155 Columbia St., will host its grand opening celebration Saturday at 8 a.m.
At the event, the first 50 shoppers inside the store will receive a $10 gift card and the first 200 will get Dollar General tote bags as well as access to other giveaways.
"It’s a special day to celebrate the opening and welcome customers to store," company spokesperson Emily Weiss said Tuesday.
Dollar General officially opened Monday, Aug. 27, after Mark Wittig Construction of North Adams completed the 9,000-square-foot building, and it was subsequently stocked with products.
The project ran according to schedule, with initial completion dates having been set for the October to November range. The construction was funded and sponsored by North Carolina-based Primax Properties LLC.
The store offers health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, décor, baby supplies, appliances, clothing, milk, cheese and frozen foods, among other items. The company is based in Goodlettsville, Tenn.
Fully staffed, the Dollar General is employing six to 10 while continuously accepting applications, Weiss said. The business hires locally.
"Our stores have been successful, with over 10,000 stores in 40 states, and we strive to be a good corporate citizen and presence in the community," Weiss said.
That said, Weiss declined to give out information
The store supports literacy and continued education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, founded in 1993, which gives grants to nonprofit organizations and coordinates with local literacy service programs to inform customers.
Adams’ store is among the first in the state, part of a franchise expansion announced by the company in 2011, targeting 625 new stores. Dollar General’s annual revenue is $13 billion.
