BENNINGTON, Vt. -- Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity is searching for families who want to explore its path to homeownership.

Interested families are encouraged to contact Habitat for information and to begin the application process as soon as possible. At the final stage of the selection process, equally qualified candidates will be given preference based on the date their completed application was received.

Completed applications will be immediately reviewed, and strong candidates will be asked to complete the pre-screening process, which involves a home visit and interview, among other things.

In December or January, after a comparative re view of the needs and strengths of all qualifying ap plicants, Habitat will select two families for its next two homes, which will be built on Jennifer Lane in Manchester.

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard housing for low-in come families throughout the world.

To qualify for consideration for a Habitat home, several specific requirements must be met. A definite need for better housing is necessary. As an indication of readiness for the long-term financial commitment of owning a home, families also must have an adequate, stable income and a record of managing money responsibly. Annual family income cannot exceed amounts identified as "low-in come" for Bennington County.
