CLARKSBURG -- A couple years ago, the Drury golf team didn’t win a match.
A 162-180 victory over Mount Everett on Tuesday put the Blue Devils into the Western Massachusetts tournament.
"I’m really proud of my team," said Drury coach Don Dagnoli. "We’ve come a long way in two years."
Matt Lawrence’s 35 led the Blue Devils on the par-34 layout at North Adams Country Club. Lawrence also shot 35 in Monday’s home match. All six Drury golfers shot better than 50 with the top four at 44 or better.
Bradley Lupiani shot a 36 for the Eagles while Devin Farnum had a 39.
McCann cross country
NORTH ADAMS -- Minnechaug’s Sam Conway and Katie Matayer set course records for the new Windsor Lake course and led their respective teams to wins over the Hornets.
Minnechaug topped the McCann boys and girls, by identical 15-50 scores. Chicopee Comp beat the McCann boys 17-43, while beating the girls 15-44.
"I think having so many runners from Minnechaug really got into their heads," coach Todd Hamilton said. "They came out in 20th to 30th position at the beginning of the race. It does take it’s toll mentally."
Conway completed the course -- being run for just the third time -- in 15 minutes, 58 seconds. The top McCann finisher in the boys’ race was Nick Kordana, who was running his second-ever race. He finished 27th in 19:32. Justin Schneider (28th, 19:36) and Mitchell
On the girls’ side, Zoe Loughman’s 19th-place finish was tops for McCann. Sophia Oliveri (21st, 25:09) and Laura Netti (32nd, 27:26) were second and third across the line for McCann, respectively.
Greylock boys’ soccer
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Mounties swept the season series with Hampden Charter with a 4-0 win on their home field.
Again, the game provided Greylock’s youth a chance to play some varsity minutes. Felix Kershaw, an eighth-grader, made good use of his time, scoring two first-half goals to stake the Mounties to a 3-0 lead through the first 40 minutes.
"Felix is a talented young player, and his skill was on display throughout the game," coach Blair Dils wrote in an email. "For an eighth-grader, he’s an extremely polished player whose knowledge of the game is excellent. He had two very smooth finishes today."
McCann girls’ soccer
GREENFIELD -- A pair of second-half goals gave McCann Tech (8-1, 6-0 Tri-County League) a 2-1 bounce-back win over Franklin Tech.
The Hornets suffered their first loss of the season Monday to St. Joseph’s, a 4-0 defeat.
"We outplayed [Franklin Tech] in the first half," said McCann coach Mike Dowling, who went on to say that it was frustrating not to finish a play.
Off the opening kickoff in the second half, Mary Nguyen took a pass from Eileen Zajac and scored 48 seconds into the final 40 minutes. Monique Martel broke the tie with 11 minutes to play.
