WILLIAMSTOWN -- The replacement of the fire station's roof continues to move forward, with the Prudential Committee awarding the project to a Westfield firm Thursday.

Committee members unanimously agreed to grant the project to Independent Roofing, which bid the lowest for the job at $36,700.

Other companies bidding on the project included Architec tural Roof Management Inc., which submitted a bid of $37,438; D.J. Wooliver & Sons Inc., which bid $43,850; J.D. Rivit & Co. Inc., which bid $48,500; Eagle Eyes Contrac tor Inc., which bid $49,450; and C.W. Construction Co. Inc., which bid $56,850. The bids were opened at 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the fire station.

John Notsley, chairman of the Prudential Committee, said the next steps are to have the contract made up, and then signed.

"From there, the work will proceed within the time frame of four weeks," he said.

In August, the Prudential Committee hired of Dalton firm Hill Engineers, Archi tects, Planners Inc., to draft building specifications for the roof replacement. The company bid $9,500 for the project.

In discussing the status of the fire station's roof at a meeting in July, the committee agreed that the roof was in bad enough shape that it would have to be replaced this year, even though the district was looking to build a new fire station. The last time the roof was replaced was in 1997.

Fire District Treasurer Paul Dube said Thursday that the

$75,000 allocated at the district's annual meeting in May should be enough to cover the roof replacement, as well as masonry and structural work that had to be done on the station over the summer. The work took place primarily on the southwest corner of the building, and has since been completed. Fire Chief Craig Pedercini said the masonry work cost $4,859, and the structural work cost $8,970.
