Sad end for wandering moose: NORTH ADAMS -- The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) was forced to euthanize an 800-plus pound male moose following a rescue attempt Tuesday, after the animal injured itself while roaming the city.

People reported sightings of the moose on East Main Street at roughly 8:30 a.m., launching a removal and rescue attempt by Berkshire County Environmental Police officers and DFG. Every North Adams Police officer on duty also responded to protect public safety.

After transporting the moose to a release site in Monroe at around 11 a.m., responders discovered the animal had broken its jaw in several places before it was sighted Tuesday, and had to shoot it. The animal would not have been able to feed in the wild due to its injury.

No sale yet for St. Francis: NORTH ADAMS -- St. Francis of Assisi Church has not been sold, according to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, despite rumors in the community.

Rumors that the city’s oldest Catholic church had sold and is being readied for demolition began circulating this weekend when a crew from King Richard’s Liturgical Design and Contracting Services, out of Georgia, arrived and began working inside the building. The crew is removing the church’s altar and the marble around it.

"This site has not be sold," Mark Dupont, diocesan spokesman, said Tuesday in an email.
