WILLIAMSTOWN -- It took the Mount Greylock offense just three plays to score a touchdown on the opening drive against Wahconah on Friday night.
However, that was the last time the Mounties would cross the goal line as the Warriors regrouped and put an end to Greylock’s Berkshire County record winning streak with a 20-8 victory.
"I think they’re a lot quicker than a lot of the teams that we’ve played," Wahconah defensive back and quarterback Lane Grogan said. "I think once we stepped it up, I think we started to get up to their speed, they made us a better team."
Wahconah answered the score with a lengthy 14-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Grogan launching a pass to Darrow Brown for the touchdown. Grogan kept the drive alive on a fourth-and-4 from just inside Mountie territory when he rolled out to his right and then broke back to his left to find Eli Pease open for the first down.
Grogan had a hand in all of his team’s touchdowns, as he threw for another in the third quarter and ran for one in the fourth.
He also had a big hand in stopping the Mounties dangerous offense, coming away with two interceptions on the night -- the first Greylock has thrown all year.
"We changed up some things [on defense]," Grogan said. "But, like our coach said, a cheeseburger is a cheeseburger. We just kept playing with what we usually play with and we kept going at it."
After the first
"We came out a little slow. On the first drive we did good, but after that we were slow," Greylock tight end Tyler Picard said. "I think we got to cocky, we thought we were going to kill them after that first drive. They’re a good team."
Barrett was hurt when he was sacked by three Warriors for a 15-yard loss at midfield. The Mounties then committed three straight false start penalties under the direction of backup quarterback Brodie Altiere.
"Brodie doesn’t get a lot of reps, so it was a different cadence," Greylock coach Shawn Flaherty said. "We definitely jumped offsides there, but I thought we did a good job of trying to regroup."
Wahconah also had penalty issues in the first half, picking up four for 30 yards. But, the Warriors found a way to regroup in the second half, scoring on the first possession of the half. The score came on a 9-yard strike from Grogan to Ryan Washburn.
"Everyone makes mistakes. The team that wins is the one who makes less mistakes," Grogan said. "At halftime that’s all we said, less mistakes is better."
