BENNINGTON, Vt. -- A man, free on conditions after pleading not guilty in June to allegedly threatening people with a gun, was held without bail Monday after he was charged with assaulting a woman he is not allowed contact with.
Anthony Coon, 23, of Bennington, pleaded not guilty to two counts of second degree aggravated domestic assault, unlawful trespass and three counts of violating release conditions.
According to police, Coon was arrested in June after a number of people at a home on Searles Crossing in Pownal said Coon had threatened to shoot them while holding an unloaded rifle fitted with a trigger lock. Coon pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault with a weapon and was held without bail until Aug. 13, when he was released on conditions that he abide by a 24-hour curfew at a residence in Bennington, not consume alcohol and not have contact with a certain woman.
That woman is the alleged victim in connection with Coon's new charges and is herself facing an obstruction of justice charge after police said she encouraged witnesses to the gun incident to lie to police. She had pleaded not guilty and the charge is pending.
According to an affidavit by Vermont State Police Trooper Christopher Burnett, on Nov. 3, at 2:15 a.m., he and another trooper went to a home on Searles Crossing for a reported family dispute. There they met a woman who appeared panicked, saying Coon was going to hurt her. Coon was located on the
According to Burnett, the woman told him that Coon had showed up at the house uninvited and was asked to leave by her and her father. She said at one point she and Coon were in her bedroom and she tried to record their conversation on her cell phone. She said Coon believed she was trying to call police and shoved her, knocking her down so her head struck a television.
She said Coon chased her outside and threatened her with a broom handle, then said he would get a knife. She told Burnett that Coon also grabbed her and picked her up while they were outside.
Burnett wrote that Coon's mood was erratic, that he was compliant but would become verbally combative with troopers. Burnett said because of this, no attempt was made to get a statement from him, but Coon told them that the woman and her father had brought him to the home and that he had consumed alcohol while he was there.
The woman told police she did not know how Coon got to her residence and said he brought the alcohol with him.
