MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The Williams College women’s hockey team is off to its best start in nearly a decade.
Gabrielle Vukaskin’s goal 13 seconds into overtime completed a comeback, as the Ephs beat Saint Anselm 4-3 Tuesday night. It was the Ephs’ fourth win of the season.
Williams is now 4-2, and the Ephs haven’t won four games before Christmas since 2004. That year, the Ephs lost their first three games but won four straight heading into the holiday break. St. Anselm falls to 7-2-2.
The Ephs have one more game to play before finals and the break. That will be Saturday at 7 at home against Elmira.
Williams fell behind 2-0 just 1:54 into the game. Vukasin stemmed the tide with a power-play goal at 6:05.
Williams outscored Saint Anselm 2-1 in the second period and Gwen Schultz’s first goal of the year tied the game at 3 late in the second.
After a scoreless third period, Schultz set up Vukasin for the game-winner.
Chloe Billadeau had 29 saves, including 15 in the third period, for the Ephs.
Williams women’s basketball
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Fresh man Oge Uwanaka came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points, and the Ephs (6-1) played shut-down defense in the second half to get back on the winning track with a 56-28 triumph over Skidmore.
Leading 34-16 at halftime, Williams held the Thoroughbreds to 12 points in the second half and Skidmore shot 11 of 49
The Williams defense was pretty solid in the first half, holding Skidmore scoreless for nearly five minutes and to one basket for the first seven minutes.
Danny Rainer had 10 points for the Ephs. Claire Baecher played only 14 minutes for the Ephs and scored two points. No Williams player was on the court for more than 25 minutes.
It was the second loss in as many games for Skidmore (2-4) against a NESCAC team, losing to Amherst over the weekend.
MCLA women’s basketball
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Lucy Tremblay had a team-high 25 points and is now 15 away from the 1,000-point milestone. It wasn’t enough as Union scored a home victory, 74-69 over the Trailblazers.
Tremblay’s performance was trumped by Union’s Kate Thompson, who scored a game-high 32 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds. In fact, Union (3-3) outrebounded MCLA 53-30.
The Trailblazers (3-3) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but were held to one point over the next six minutes and never caught up.
MCLA trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, but got back in the game and when Kait Chenevert hit a jumper with 2:41 left, bringing the Trailblazers within 65-63. Union outscored MCLA 9-6 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Williams men’s basketball
MILTON -- Sedale Jones did all he could, but in the end, the Williams College men’s basketball team had too much firepower.
Jones scored a game-high 34 points, but three Eph starters each scored more than 20 points as Williams (6-1) got back on the winning track with a 97-93 victory.
Mike Mayer had 26 points to lead Williams while James Klemm and Taylor Epley had 22 each.
