WILLIAMSTOWN -- After seven years in business, a local store selling high-end clothing will close its doors at the end of the month.
Men and women's clothing boutique theBrowns has been located in the former Phillips General Store space at 16 Water St. since July of 2005. Owner Mikki Brown, of Williamstown, stressed her reasons for closing weren't linked to the economy.
"The closing is related to something I have to do in my personal life," she said during a recent interview in her store. She added that if anyone was interested in buying the store, she would be willing to discuss options with them.
The store has carried well-known brands like Eileen Fisher, Fabrizio Gianni and Jerome Dreyfuss, and occasionally carried vintage pieces.
Prior to the store's opening, Brown had spent 30 years in the retail and wholesale business, working at stores like Saks Fifth Avenue.
The store will be closing Dec. 30, following a month-long closing sale.
"Everything is on some kind of sale, except jewelry and eye glasses," Brown said.
Brown also encouraged customers to visit her store's Facebook page. There, they'll find a "photo retrospective" of the past several years at the store. Brown said she has been posting four or five pictures every day.
A sign posted on the front door announces the store's closing: "Thanks to you, we've had a very good run," it reads. It also features a quote from fashion designer Halston:
Over the years, theBrowns has featured the works of various local artists, most recently featuring ceramic artist Leslie Morgenthal in April. The store has taken part in Williamstown's annual Holiday Walk, and also partnered with other Williamstown businesses for special events.
In 2006, theBrowns teamed up with Mezze Bistro + Bar to host a "Food and Fashion" event. In 2008, theBrowns hosted a Japanese fashion show with the Clark Art institute, featuring clothing the store carried, as well as clothing from Brown's personal collection.
