READSBORO, Vt. -- Kathleen Codogni, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Codogni of Tunnel Street, a pupil in Grade 7 at Readsboro Central School, placed second in the Windham Southwest Supervisory Union district in the annual forest essay contest sponsored by the state Forestry Department. WILLIAMSTOWN -- Domin’s Union Oil Service Station on State Road will open tomorrow under new management. The new operators are Ernest and Arthur Nicklien, brothers. Ernest was formerly employed at Mt. Hope Farm while Arthur worked on a farm in New Ashford. They will lease the garage from Mr. Domin and continue the Union Oil franchise.

NORTH ADAMS -- Dr. Elliott Goldberg, son of Ida Goldberg of North Adams, is an internationally known physician and a successful writer of books on medical topics, as well as several novels. He is now collaborating on a book with the two discoverers of the AIDS virus, Dr. Robert Gallo and Dr. Luc Montagnier. Dr. Goldberg is chief of endocrinology at Hurley Medical Center and a professor of medicine at Michigan State University.

ADAMS -- WBEC Radio has announced the appointment of Lynn Swistak of Adams to the newly created position of director of business and traffic. Ms. Swistak has been employed by WBEC since June 1984, when she was hired as a bookkeeper. One month later she was promoted to business manager, a

position she has held ever since. In her new position, she will continue to preside over the books, but will have the added responsibility of overseeing the scheduling.

NORTH ADAMS -- It’s been about two decades since Hickory Dickory Dock closed its toy store on Eagle Street, but this year the toys are back in town at Persnickety Toys, Games and Fun. The "Persnickety" name may be the same, but it’s really a whole new store. Owner Monique Suters said she decided to expand beyond the baby items she began her business with about a year go, changing her focus to "all-out-toys" for all ages. The shop is located at 13 Eagle St.

NORTH ADAMS -- The McCann Tech boys’ basketball team lost their opening game against Lenox, 57-37. Josh Meczywor led the Hornets with 11 points, including two three-pointers. Joe Lavigne, who also had two three-pointers, added 10 points. Steve Cahoon put forth an excellent defensive effort.
