50 years ago today

ADAMS -- Cadet Master Sgt. Joan King, of Adams, became one of four Massachusetts girls to win Civil Air Patrol certificates of proficiency this year. Miss King, daughter of Mary King of Water Street, is a freshman at North Adams State College. This certificate makes her eligible to attend Officer Candidate School in the Women’s Air Force. NORTH ADAMS -- Berkshire County Sheriff-elect John Courtney Jr., police chief of Williamstown, made public, his list of appointments. They include Henry Como, of 34 West Shaft Road, as a Berkshire County Jail guard, and Milton Lavigne, of 32 Olds St., and Edward Major, of Orchard Street in Adams, as deputy sheriffs for the serving of civil papers.

25 years ago today

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Marion Alton of Williamstown was re-elected president of the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern Berkshire Inc. Also re-elected were Barbara Barlow of Stamford, Vt., first vice president; Harry Webster of North Adams, second vice president; and Robin Clutz of Williamstown, third vice president. Joseph Kershaw of Williamstown is treasurer and Esther Bashevkin of North Adams is secretary.

NORTH ADAMS -- The Coffee Shoppe, located in the North Adams Center, a haven for hungry city shopkeepers and shoppers for several years, has been purchased by Walter and Gayle Pellerin. The restaurant was previously owned by Donald Gaffey, Mr.

Pellerin’s uncle. The entire menu has been changed to include a full breakfast menu and luncheon and daily dinner specials.

NORTH ADAMS -- Childsy Robinson Art, M.D., recently joined the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Department of Williamstown Medical Associates, which has offices in Williamstown and North Adams, and is on the medical staff of North Adams Regional Hospital. Art received her medical degree from Yale University and completed three years of her residency in Palo Alto, Calif.

NORTH ADAMS -- In recent action from the North Adams Youth Basketball League, Saulnier defeated Flynn-Dagnoli 61-56. Kevin Meehan topped all scorers with 19 points for Saulnier, followed by Dave Vidal with 18. Matt Storey led Flynn-Dagnoli with 13 points and Devin Gotham dropped in 11 points.
