PITTSFIELD -- Digital First Media, which operates MediaNews Group, the Journal Register Company and Digital First Ventures, on Wednesday announced the retirement of Andy Mick, the president of New England Newspapers Inc. and the publisher of The Berkshire Eagle.
Mick, who will turn 64 on Jan. 27, will remain with New England Newspapers through March 31. Digital First Media said it has started an immediate search for his successor, both internally and externally.
"Andy has made the Berkshires his home, and his commitment to the community has made him a tremendous leader, and he will be sorely missed," said Jeff Bairstow, president of Digital First Media. "We wish Andy the best as he seeks new adventures and enjoys the beauty of the region he has served for more than a decade."
Mick has served as president of New England Newspapers -- which comprises the North Adams Transcript, The Advocate in Williamstown, The Berkshire Eagle, the Bennington (Vt.) Banner, the Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer and The Manchester (Vt.) Journal -- for 13 years.
Mick worked for The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group before joining MediaNews Group in 1990.

Deciding to retire wasn't easy, but "you kind of know when it's time," Mick said.
"I think everybody has to come to terms with that at some point in their life," he said.
The Richmond resident said he plans to remain socially, economically and intellectually part of the community after he retires.
