NORTH ADAMS -- Retired city police officer Bill Davis' Pitt St. home was recently robbed, and he's not letting it go quietly.
Davis is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to a conviction, which can be confidentially provided to North Adams Police Det. John LeClair, or through the department's Facebook page.
"The guy who did this is not an amateur," Davis said. "He's an experienced burglar. If he's not stopped he'll continue to burglarize, and if caught in a house he might hurt someone."
The Dec. 30 robbery saw just that circumstance occur, though it wasn't Davis who was hurt.
Arriving home that evening, Davis had found a kitchen window broken and door ajar before hearing movement upstairs.
"I knew at that point what had happened," Davis said.
This person jumped out Davis' second story window as the officer of 25 years rushed up the stairs for a confrontation.
The upstairs, Davis reports, had been gone through and valuables taken, though he preferred not to state these for the record.
So far, Davis said, LeClair's investigation is going well, and he hopes the reward offer will give it a shot in the arm.
"It's my intent to help bring [the burglar] to justice," Davis said.
In his estimation, the suspect is a "very active" burglar.
In 2009, Davis' home was targeted by another burglar, who took guns appraised at a total value of $14,000.
That individual was arrested
Davis retired from the city's police force in 1997 after sustaining a neck injury on duty.
In 1987, Davis was given an award for valor from then-Governor Michael Dukakis, after he'd prevented the getaway of several armed criminals who'd hijacked an armored car containing $435,000 in Williamstown.
