50 years ago today

ADAMS -- John Dempsey of 155 Friend St., who is associated with his father in the operation of Martin’s Shoe Store in North Adams, has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain in the Vermont National Guard. Mr. Dempsey received his commission in the Army Reserve in 1956. He completed his two years active duty in July, 1958 and returned to North Adams to assist his father. NORTH ADAMS -- Deborah Joseph, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Joseph of 3 Arlington Court, is one of four Berkshire County dancers who have been chosen to perform with the Berkshire Ballet Guild. The auditions were held at the Cantarella School of Dance in Pittsfield. Miss Joseph has been a student at the school for the last seven years and studies there three times a week. She is a Grade 6 pupil at St. Joseph’s School.

25 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Nassif’s Professional Pharmacy President Allen Nassif has announced that W. Mark Wheeler has been made a partner in the corporation. Mr. Wheeler, 36, attended Cranwell School in Lenox and then Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He is the former owner of Lee Pharmacy.

NORTH ADAMS -- Dr. Margaret Soderberg, vice president of academic affairs at North Adams State College, has announced the names of local students who were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. Local students are Traci Chenaille

NORTH ADAMS -- In North Adams YMCA Girls Basketball action recently, Mister Tire continued its winning ways with a 32-17 victory over Adams Co-Op. Jenna Gazzaile led a balanced scoring attack for the winners with eight points, while Tiffany Hartlage and Angela Saltamatini added six each. Andrea Deschamps topped Co-Op with nine points, followed by Sarah Burton with four.

ADAMS -- E-4 Eugene Zepka, son of Helen Zepka of 35 Gilead St., has been called to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is assigned to the 238th Tactical Transportation at Fort Sill, Enid, Okla. Zepka has more than 20 years of military service and is employed by Souliere and Zepka Contracting.
