NORTH ADAMS -- The Northern Berkshire Santa Fund raised $23,991 in donations from individuals, organizations and business in the community who helped put presents under the tree this holiday season for local needy children.
Once again, businesses and individuals in Northern Berkshire County were very generous in 2012," Peter Lynch, Santa Fund president and Transcript publisher, said Wednesday. "We appreciate every donation, and they mean so much to the 582 children that were served this year."
The fund provided toys to children from eligible Northern Berkshire families who might otherwise have been unable to buy their children holiday gifts this year.
"We received contributions that covered the needs of all the families who wanted to provide gifts for their children this year," Lynch said. "We look forward to serving even more children during the 2013 holiday season."
The Santa Fund has provided gifts to more than 500 children a year for the past three years in a row.
Last year, local individuals, businesses and organizations donated a total of $23,952, all of which was used to purchase toys.
Launched in 1958 by the Transcript and the former Sprague Electric Co. Management Club, the Santa Fund, now in its 54th year, continues to operate under the auspices of an all-volunteer board, with no administrative costs, and eligibility requirements that are firm, but fair. Lynch also thanked the Santa Fund's board of directors and the volunteers who helped with this year's toy distribution to families on two days in December.
