NORTH ADAMS -- A cracked water main on Wells Avenue led to service being shut off for much of Monday afternoon while crews replaced a section of pipe.
Timothy Lescarbeau, commissioner of public services, estimated about 20 homes in the area of Wells and Northern Lights avenues, as well as Franklin and Barth streets, saw a disruption in service.
Water service was shut off Monday morning so crews could access a six-inch water line that had cracked around the sides, Lescarbeau said. City employees had to completely replace a section of pipe.
Lescarbeau said he hoped service would be returned by 7 p.m. on Monday.
Crews had trouble accessing the line because other utilities were in the way, he said.
"It's a tough job when it's so cold out, and when it's an old system," he added.
