NORTH ADAMS -- A 42-year-old Cheshire man was allegedly intoxicated when arrested early Tuesday morning, after police say he drove the wrong way down Porter Street and refused to stop.
Kenneth A. Shade, of School Street in Cheshire, was arraigned Tuesday in Northern Berkshire District Court on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, second-offense operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, failure to stop for police and driving the wrong way on a state highway.
Police responded to Ashland Street at 1:20 a.m. on a report of a pickup truck with its floodlights on driving over curbs, according to Patrolman Erik Thomas’ report.
On arrival, Thomas observed the vehicle, a Chevrolet, swerving and driving up on curbs and attempted to block its path with his patrol car.
The operator drove around him, turning on to Washington Avenue, then back onto Ashland and then the wrong way down one-way Porter Street before coming to a stop at the Armory.
Shade, later identified as the operator, exited his vehicle and refused to get back in, Thomas writes in the report. Shade later failed a field sobriety test and an empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s was found in his truck, the report states.
A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for April 5. Shade was released on personal recognizance.
