NORTH ADAMS -- Anytime you can hold an opponent scoreless in a quarter of basketball, good things will come your way. When the McCann Tech girls' basketball team did it to Southwick in the final eight minutes of Thursday night's game, it allowed the Hornets to complete the comeback, 27-25.
"Shutting them down with zero points in the fourth quarter was really big," coach Mike Dowling said simply.
On the same night the girls' soccer team had its banner raised for a league championship in the fall, the basketball team secured at least a share of the Bi-County West title.
"It was only fitting that we put up our soccer banner for 2012 and now they have to take the basketball banner down to put up 2013," Dowling said.
The Hornets scored five straight points at the end of the third quarter to close the Southwick lead to four. Jaclyn Maziarz then made a 3-pointer to put the Rams back up seven heading into the final frame.
Kelly Dobbert opened the fourth with a 3-pointer and a basket to cut the deficit to two. As the Hornets continued to chip away, Emijah Barton and Eileen Zajac continued their dominance on the boards at both ends and the defense contested every shot. Southwick never made the one basket it.
"They played very hard. Defense and the rebounding was phenomenal," Dowling said. "[Southwick] couldn't get a shot off. That started back in the third quarter and they always had a hand in their face."
