50 years ago today

CLARKSBURG -- Howard Tanner was elected to the Board of Selectmen for three years and Shirley Cahoon was named to a second three-year term on the School Committee on Tuesday as voters went to the polls for the annual town election. Mr. Tanner defeated his opponent, Leonard Lewitt, by a vote of 203 to 166. Mrs. Cahoon, the present chairman of the School Committee, won in a three-way race with 170 votes. Her opponents, Forist Mclain Jr. and Agnes Witto, polled 109 and 90 votes, respectively. NORTH ADAMS -- Donald Frizzell of Adams has been named chief X-ray technician at North Adams Hospital. He replaces Gordon Smith who left the position after four years to take a selling job with a British X-ray film company. Mr. Frizzell previously had been chief X-ray technician at Plunkett Memorial Hospital in Adams.

NORTH ADAMS -- The North Adams Lodge 487 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks have announced winners of "Student of the Month" for November. They are Jeffrey Slade, son of John and Peggy Slade of East Road, Clarksburg, a senior at Charles H. McCann Technical School; Bradford Behr, son of Robert and Carolyn Behr of Williamstown, a senior a Mt. Greylock Regional High School; and Amy Babcock, daughter of Bryce and Phyllis Babcock of 1025 State Road, a senior at Drury Senior High School.

McCann Technical School; and Ryan Lapidus, son of Dr. Ira and Frances Lapidus of 95 Hill Province Road, Williamstown, a senior at Mt. Greylock Regional High School.

ADAMS -- Brent Whitney, son of Karen Whitney of Adams and Jay Whitney of Cheshire, was the recipient of a portfolio nomination in the prestigious 2003 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards Program. The competition is open to art students in all public, private and parochial schools in Massachusetts. Whitney is a student at Hoosac Valley High School in Cheshire.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Robert Burdick Jr. of North Adams, regional manager at Hoosac Bank, has been named assistant vice president of commercial services at Williamstown Savings Bank. Stephen Crowe, president and chief executive officer for both banks, said Burdick’s responsibilities at the bank include commercial lending and business development. He joined Hoosac Bank in 1982.
