NORTH ADAMS -- Directed by Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker, the inspiring film "Kings of Pastry" follows a group of French pastry chefs in their quest for culinary perfection as they compete for the title of one of the "Best Craftsmen in France."
An official selection of the Los Angeles Film Festival, the film shows as part of MASS MoCA's Thursday night Cinema Lounge series tonight at 7:30.
The prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, or in English, the "Best Craftsmen in France," pits the most talented artisans against one another, all for the glory of being declared one of the best by former President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sixteen French pastry chefs gather in Lyon, France, for three intense days of mixing, piping, and carving everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot-tall sugar sculptures.
Kings of Pastry documents the chefs' quest for the blue, white, and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the competition winners -- an honor of ultimate recognition that is as much a dream as it is an obsession.
"Kings of Pastry" is the third installment in "Compete!," MASS MoCA's Cinema Lounge series celebrating how teams win, lose, and, most importantly, play the game. The film series takes place up in MASS MoCA's Club B-10 on the third floor is an intimate, casual venue. Drinks from the MASS MoCA bar, as well as snacks from Lickety Split, are available before and during the screenings.
