NORTH ADAMS -- A Bennington, Vt., resident is being held without bail and awaiting extradition in Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction after he allegedly pointed a gun at another man during an argument in Vermont and then fled the state.
Christopher J. Gagne, 38, was arraigned Monday in Northern Berkshire District Court on a charge of being a fugitive from justice on a court warrant. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for March 22.
Gagne will face felony charges in Vermont of unlawful restraint, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a deadly weapon after an argument inside a Union Street apartment on Friday, March 15.
In a written release, Lt. Lloyd Dean said Bennington police received the initial complaint from a local resident at about 2:30 that afternoon. Police interviewed a witness who stated they saw the two men arguing. A search warrant for the Union Street apartment was obtained and the apartment was put under surveillance, but police said Gagne was not found inside when the warrant was executed.
Gagne was entered as a wanted person in the national crime information center database, and Bennington police gathered information that he was likely in Williamstown. Local authorities there entered the home they suspected Gagne was in at 2:30 a.m., Saturday and arrested him as a fugitive from Vermont.
