ADAMS -- The town's -- and Berkshire County's -- oldest restaurant is for sale.
The Red Carpet and building housing it at 69 Park St., is listed at $495,000, or a down payment of $99,000 with a $2,218 monthly mortgage. The interest rate on such a loan would be 3.55 percent.
George Haddad, owner with his sister Ann Marie Bartlett, said his family's had "a nice run" of 63 years with the business in an interview Wednesday.
"It's pretty simple," said Haddad. "None of our children are going to carry on the business and we're looking for someone who'll take it over and run it like we do."
The two-story commercial property is being brokered and marketed by Bishop West Team Realty.
Peter West, of Bishop West, said Wednesday that marketing has been relatively quiet to this point, beginning at the start of 2013.
There's interest, West said, but "until something happens we're going to keep it pretty quiet. We want to protect the integrity of the business."
Public records list the Red Carpet at 3,782 square feet, with three bathrooms and one apartment unit. The structure was built in 1969 and a 2011 assessment lists its value at $160,000. Its full liquor license would carry over to the new ownership.
West said he fully expects a new restaurant to land in the space.
"It's the highest and best use," West said.
"[The buyer] will be very impressed with what we've built over the years." Haddad said. "I think some fine tuning, maybe some improvements, and I'm sure they'll have success,"
Haddad's father, James, bought the business from William C. Clifford in 1950. Clifford had operated Clifford's Lunch at the spot since 1927.
The Haddad's made it a very popular establishment, refining a menu of home-styled classics from meatloaf to fish and steak, to hamburgers, fries and sandwiches. The business also enjoys a faithful breakfast crowd.
Aged 69 and 64 years, Haddad and Bartlett are anticipating retirement, Bartlett said.
"It's just the right time to do it," Bartlett said.
Haddad, a former town Selectman, said a return to town politics is possible.
"I'll want something to do," Haddad said. "I won't be going into hiding."
