PITTSFIELD - Rescue crews are searching Tuesday for a missing swimmer in the Housatonic River off Mill Street. Authorities started their search around noontime.
The man was apparently swimming with others in a large pool upstream of a dam when he was pulled underneath the surface by the strong current. Crews are using an underwater camera in their search of the deepest part of the pool, specifically around the area of a submerged pipe, according to an Eagle reporter at the scene and scanner reports.
Pittsfield firefighters in wet suits earlier had used ladders and a boat to get into position to use a long pole to plumb the depths, but didn't immediately locate anything.
Part of the pool apparently drains into a large underwater pipe, creating a water vortex on the surface, and continues downstream.
