NORTH ADAMS -- A city man is facing charges after allegedly kidnapping and threatening the life of a woman from Queens, N.Y.
Raymond Alexander, 20, of Chestnut Street, was arraigned Tuesday in Northern Berkshire District Court Tuesday on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery, and threatening to commit a crime (murder).
According to a report by North Adams Police Sgt. James Burdick, police received a call from a New York 911 dispatch center at roughly 10:15 p.m. on Monday detailing a call coming from the alleged victim's sister in Queens. The sister told authorities she had just received an email from the alleged victim stating she had been kidnapped and taken to a home on Chestnut Street in North Adams.
Police say that when they arrived at the home, the alleged victim began to cry and stated Alexander had brought her to Massachusetts against her will.
The woman told authorities that she and Alexander had known each other for several years after meeting through mutual friends on Facebook. They had been dating since 2011, she said, and had a history of fighting.
While Alexander was visiting her in Queens on Monday, she said, the couple fought about her attending college this fall. The woman stated Alexander repeatedly tried to convince her to attend Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in order to be closer to him, and became agitated when she refused.
The woman told authorities that Alexander grabbed her by the neck with both hands in an attempt to choke her. He then allegedly yelled at her and stated that if she didn't move to Massachusetts, he would kill her and then kill himself.
The woman told authorities she then cooperated with Alexander, who reportedly drove both of them to North Adams.
Calls to MCLA inquiring whether Alexander was enrolled in the college, and whether he would face disciplinary action, were not returned as of press time.
On Tuesday, Alexander was ordered held for observation at the Bridgewater State Hospital without the right to bail for a period not to exceed 20 days. Following that period, he will be held at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Corrections.
A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for 9 a.m., on Aug. 19, at Northern Berkshire District Court.
