50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams jet pilot whose Air Force service began 17 years ago, has been promoted to major. He is Philip Pugliese Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Pugliese of 92 Galvin Road. He received the promotion at Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Fla., where he has been stationed for nearly a year. Maj. Pugliese began his service in December, 1942, when he signed up as an Air Force private.

ADAMS -- First prize in the 40th annual Junior Prize Speaking Contest of Adams Memorial High School last night at the school auditorium was won by Ruth Lambert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lambert of 4 Lambert Ter. Second prize was won by Margaret Kustra, daughter of Mt. and Mrs. Stanley Kustra of 24 Anthony St., and third prize was awarded to John Guercio, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Guercio of Cheshire.

SAVOY -- Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Donald Kaczowski, son of Adolf and Jean Kaczowski of Loop Road, recently returned from a one-month deployment. He is a crew member aboard the guided missile frigate USS Flatley, out of Mayport, Fla. During the deployment, the ship conducted operations in international waters in the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

NORTH ADAMS -- Four seniors and one 1983 graduate from Hoosac Valley High School have received certificates for completing a course in medical terminology and transcription sponsored by the medical record

department of the North Adams Regional Hospital. Certificates were presented to Michelle Bissaillon, Vicki Bednarz, Laurie Clermont and Mary Markland, all seniors at Hoosac Valley. Also receiving a certificate was Paula Bettis, who graduated in 1983.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Two Mount Greylock Regional High School juniors have been selected to participate in the Massachusetts Boys State to be held June 12-18 at Stonehill College, North Easton. The delegates chosen are Ben Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Erickson of 81 Buxton Hill Road, and Seth Hamblin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hamblin of 59 Harrison Ave. The alternates chosen are Tony Catalano, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cosmo Catalano of 21 White Oaks Road, and Tyler Dewitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dewitt of 355 Buckley St.

NORTH ADAMS -- Daniel Robbins, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, has joined the medical staff of North Adams Regional Hospital and will see patients through Orthopedic Association, Drs. Eric White and James Whittum, at their offices in the Doctor's Building on the NARH campus. Robbins has been in private care for over 10 years and practices all forms of spine care, including anterior, posterior, cervical and lumbar, as well as spinal and discal arthritis.
