Columbus Day will see droves once again tackle Mount Greylock in the 45th annual Ramble, but Sunday’s Ramblefest puts a new event on the Adams social calendar that we think is a great addition for a town in the midst of redefining itself as the recreational destination of the Berkshires.
Designed as a satellite celebration to the staple ascent of the state’s highest peak -- after the fashion of March’s successful Thunderfest, the complement of the Thunderbolt Ski Runners’ annual race on the famous Greylock ski trail -- Sunday’s festival will boast live music, food and beer vendors, games, activities for the kids and more from 1 to 6 p.m., at the Adams Visitors Center.
All this will be rounded out by historical tours of downtown given by Adams Historical Society members on North Adams’ trolley. Society members will take on the roles of the town’s historical figures and interact with people at the Adams Free Library, Victory Street at Summer Street and Town Hall. In addition, the Ski Runners are set to unveil their Thunderbolt Ski Race display in the center at noon.
The well-attended community gathering that was Thunderfest is an indicator of what’s in store Sunday. Organizers learned much from Thunderfest and now know how to build on the successes of what was already a winning idea its first time out.

We think it’s the right plan for a town that is in need of a strategy to capitalize on, and it’s one that we think will gain much more traction when the Greylock Glen development comes to pass. However, early work now, such as adding these celebrations, helps set the framework for a renaissance later.
We hope that people all over the area recall the great time had at Thunderfest and come back for more Sunday.
