TINMOUTH -- Vermont authors from Brattleboro to the Northeast Kingdom are the featured instructors at the annual Green Mountain Writers Conference this summer. Registration for the conference, which will be held July 30 to Aug. 3, is under way.
Held in a former dance pavilion surrounded by expansive lawns along the shore of tiny Tinmouth Pond, the conference has for 15 years brought aspiring writers together with published authors in a supportive and nurturing environment. This year’s conference features Vermont writers Howard Frank Mosher, Castle Freeman, Yvonne Daley, Verandah Porche, Chuck Clarino David Budbill, Geof Hewitt and writing coach, book "doctor" and agent Susan Sutliffe Brown.
Through discussions, working sessions, readings and one-on-one meetings, participants develop their writing skills and share their work with other writers at all levels of development.
Both Freeman and Daley have been involved in efforts to raise funds for people who sustained losses from Tropical Storm Irene. Proceeds from Freeman’s collection of short stories, "Round Mountain," and Daley’s "A Mighty Storm" benefit towns and people who fell victim to the storm’s wrath.
Freeman of Newfane was an essayist for "The Old Farmer’s Almanac "and has written four novels while Daley, who lives in Rutland and San Francisco, is the author of four nonfiction books and more than 5,000 news and feature articles. They are joined
Porche of Guilford is known for her engaging poetry and songs, often with topical subjects. Budbill, who often accompanies his poetry on drums, saxophone and metal bowls, lives in Wolcott, where he has produced a dozen books that span the genres of poetry, prose, children’s literature and plays. And Hewitt of Calais is nationally known for his spoken word poetry and workshops for teachers and writers.
New to the conference this year, Brown of Woodstock, N.Y., will help writers ready their works for publication and offer one-on-one consultations on projects from idea to publication.
