PITTSFIELD -- Wally, the most famous stegosaurus in the Berkshires, will celebrate his 15th birthday on Sunday, Oct. 14, with a family friendly party at Berkshire Museum.
The Museum will be open from noon to 5 p. m. and general admission is free all day. Gather on the lawn at 2 p.m. to sing Happy Birthday to Wally, and then enjoy birthday cake and punch.
Wally took up residence at Berkshire Museum in October 1997. The fiberglass replica Stegosaurus, which was given to the museum by Carol and Tom McCann, is approximately 22-feet long, 10-feet tall, 5-feet wide, and weighs 1,200 pounds.
The stegosaurus was a large, plant-eating dinosaur that roamed the western United States 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period.
Wally was the second Stegosaurus created from the mold made by the Louis Paul Jonas Studios of Hudson, N.Y., the studio of famed wildlife sculptor Louis Paul Jonas. The first Stegosaurus was part of the Sinclair Dinoland exhibition at the New York World’s Fair in 1964 and 1965.
Wally spent 30 years on the grounds of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History before coming to the Berkshire Museum in 1997 after a reconditioning by the Jonas Studios.
Contest winner Levi Bissell named him "Wally" because Stegosaurus had a brain the size of a walnut.
Berkshire Museum is located at 39 South Steet, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday,
