CHESTER -- On Thursday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Chester Family Medicine, part of Springfield Medical Care Systems, brings bluegrass band Big Spike to the Academy lawn as part of the Chester Summer Music Series.
Based in northern Vermont, Big Spike plays hard-driving traditional bluegrass, with an emphasis on three- and four-part harmonies. They feature twin fiddles and original material in the traditional style. Its members are mainstays of the New England bluegrass scene.
Members of Big Spike are alumni of some of the best-known regional and national bands, including Three Wheel Drive, Smokin’ Grass, The David Bromberg Band, The Spark Gap Wonder Boys, Two Chord Jones and Bob Yellin & The Joint Chiefs Of Bluegrass.
Banjo player Bill Gaston sings all the vocal parts and is known for his sense of humor. Mike Santosusso plays upright bass and sings tenor and lead. Guitarist Matt Schrag sings lead and tenor and also plays mandolin. Fiddle player Freeman Corey is the son of a fine old time fiddler, and started playing at age 10. Mandolin player Neil Rossi doubles on fiddle and sings lead and baritone, and handles much of the songwriting.
Bring blankets and lawn chairs. In case of rain the Big Spike concert will be held at The Stone Hearth Inn, Route 11 West.
