NORTH ADAMS -- A collision involving a 2009 Dodge Caravan and an over-the-road crane at the intersection of State Road and Roberts Drive could have been far worse, according to North Adams Police Director Mi chael Cozzaglio.
The accident oc curred at 7:39 a.m. on Tuesday when the driver of the Caravan reportedly pulled out in front of the crane and resulted in only minor injuries, but it totaled the Caravan.
"Thankfully, the impact point occurred just behind the driver’s area of the van," Cozzaglio said. "If the impact had happened at the driver’s door, it would have been more serious."
While the accident is still under investigation, he said that it appears the driver of the Dodge Caravan pulled out in front of Robert Rey nolds, 56, of North Adams, who was driving the crane.
Cozzaglio declined to name the driver of the Caravan, a 16-year-old junior operator from North Adams, and her passenger, also a minor.
"The driver of the large over-the-road crane was head ing west on State Road [Route 2] when the driver of the Caravan pulled out in front of him," he said.
"There was nothing the driver of the crane could do to avoid the impact."
According to preliminary police reports, the driver of the van reported minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital at the scene.
