CLARKSBURG -- Northern Berkshire is gearing up for the Annual Jocelyn LeClair Memorial Scholarship Race, set to take place on Sunday, May 19, at Clarksburg State Forest.
The event, now in its 12th year, is held in memory of the 15-year-old Drury High School student who died after contracting bacterial meningitis in the summer of 2001.
'We usually get about 100 people walking and running,' Pat LeClair, Jocelyn's mother, said Friday.
The race was founded by Jocelyn's close friend Allyson Holmes, LeClair said, as Jocelyn loved track and field. The 5k-run will begin at 10 a.m., while the one-mile walk will begin at 10:30 a.m., she said.
Proceeds from the event support the memorial scholarship in Jocelyn's name, which is awarded to two Drury High School students and two McCann Technical School students. In addition, proceeds also go toward the Northern Berkshire YMCA and the R.O.P.E.S. Camp, a free, week-long summer program for students.
Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female winners and the top winners in each age category. In addition, T-shirts will be available to the first 150 people who register, either for the 5k or one-mile walk. The event will also feature a raffle and a picnic following the race's conclusion.
In the years the event has been held, it's become a way for people that knew Jocelyn to reconnect, as well as raise funds for young athletes, LeClair said.
'It becomes a great reunion almost with [Jocelyn's] friends and family friends,' she said. 'Some people don't come to do either [the walk or the run.] Some come just to visit.'
LeClair said support from the community has been great in the 11 years the race has been held. Many businesses help by sponsoring the race, she said, and a group of volunteers start to organize the race in March.
'Most importantly, it's for our daughter,' LeClair said. 'It's a very emotional day for my husband and I. It's wonderful to see the people who come out every year. There's people who knew [Jocelyn] and people who didn't know her.'
Entry forms are available at Hoosac Bank and the Northern Berkshire YMCA. Pre-entry registration must be received no later than Sunday, May 12. Cost for pre-entry is $15, and day-of registration is $20. Day-of-race registration begins at 8 a.m.
