PITTSFIELD -- Republican Gabriel Gomez is to make his second campaign swing to Berkshire County today to rally support for his U.S. Senate campaign.
Gomez faces off with Democrat U.S. Rep. Edward Markey in the June 25 special election for the seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry.
Today, Gomez makes two stops in Pittsfield, one of which marks his first formal rally in the region.
At 2:30 p.m., the public is invited to a rally and tour of Lenco Armored Vehicles, which is celebrating 30 years of manufacturing transports for law enforcement and the U.S. military. At 4 p.m., Gomez will be interviewed by host Jim Bronson for "Out Front TV," the Berkshire County GOP TV show produced and broadcast through the studios of Access Pittsfield.
Gomez, 47, of Cohasset, is a Navy and Navy SEALS veteran and a private equity investor. He hasn't held public office.
Local resident Steve Melito, who has helped to organize today's campaign stops with Mike Case, said Gomez is "very committed to a statewide campaign."
Melito calls it "a big election for hunters and gun owners. Ed Markey has a zero-percent rating from the NRA. People are very energized for this election, and I think the Berkshires is kind of a good fit for Gomez in that way."
According to his campaign website, Gomez is "a new generation of Republican leader with a great American story."
Unlike others who have run for a U.S. Senate seat, the Los Angeles-born son of Colombian immigrants is not a career politician.
"When I met him when he came here the last time, it was like talking to a regular person. He's a military guy as well, and military people are results oriented, which is something I think this country needs," Melito said.
Gomez previously visited with voters in Lee in Pittsfield back in April, in advance of the April 30 primary. If you go
