NORTH ADAMS -- A 49-year-old Sandy Hook, Conn., man is in critical condition at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield from a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon on Beaver Street (Route 8), according to a hospital representative.
Sgt. James Burdick said the driver, Bryan Coppola, and his passenger, Kyle Czarsty, 52, of Watertown, Conn., were both injured when their southbound 2004 BMW motorcycle collided with a northbound 2007 Mitsubishi Gallant driven by Carole Rau, 35, of Turners Falls, shortly after 2 p.m.
According to Burdick, Rau attempted to make a turn into the Natural Bridge State Park (McAuley Road) and did so in the path of the southbound motorcycle.
Both Coppola and Czarsty were thrown over the top of the car into the roadway, Burdick said.
Following the accident, Coppola and Czarsty were transported to North Adams Regional Hospital where Coppola was airlifted to Baystate Medical by LifeFlight helicopter shortly after 4:30 p.m., he said.
Rau, along with two minor children who were her passengers, were both uninjured, Burdick said.
Rau is being charged with a marked lanes violation, Burdick said, adding the charge is subject to change depending on Coppola's status.
The extent of Coppola and Czarsty's injuries, along with Czarsty's condition, were unavailable as of press time.
The motorcycle was totaled as a result of the crash and was towed by Dean's Quality Auto, Burdick said, while the Mitsubishi driven by Rau was heavily damaged and towed by Mohawk Auto Wrecking.
The North Adams Police Department, the North Adams Fire Department, and the North Adams Ambulance Service responded to the accident, which closed the road for about half an hour.
