LEE — A brief but nasty thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon brought another round of heavy downpours, hail and a lightning strike that touched off a structure fire in Lee.

The bolt of electricity hit a two-and-a-half story work barn at 421 Greylock St. Authorities and eyewitnesses said smoke and flames began shooting through the second floor of the building, which is just a few feet from the house owned by Angela Morel. She was not at home when the lightning struck just after 3:30 p.m.

Mitch Korn lives across the street and was startled by Mother Nature's latest fury unleashed on the town.

"I heard a loud crack and saw the lightning bolt," said Korn. "The noise was so loud and scary my dogs were shaking for 10 minutes."

Lee Fire Capt. Glenn Wilcox said it took firefighters 15 minutes to douse the blaze, which did most of its damage to the inside of the barn.

He added the building appeared to be structurally sound, but that determination is up to the Lee building inspector.
