ADAMS -- More than 40 headstones have been toppled at the Maple Street Cemetery in a massive act of vandalism that mirrors incidents that have happened in Pittsfield and North Adams recently.
Late last week, Cemetery Com-issioner David Nuvallie found that dozens of the grave markers had been knocked off their pedestals, broken in half or uprooted from the ground.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williams College might see the state shave a yearly slice from its $2 billion endowment fund if a plan some legislators are supporting passes into law, but administrators are arguing the law would be unconstiutional.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Mount Greylock Regional High School now owns a foreign language learning laboratory thanks to a large donation of equipment from Williams College.
"One of the real objectives of foreign language programs is to have kids become fluent in the speaking of a language, not just in the grammar and reading part of it," Superintendent William Travis said on Thursday.

50 years ago today
NORTH ADAMS -- Rudolph Benedetti, physical education teacher in city schools, has been reappointed to the Recreation Commission for a five-year term. Mr. Benedetti, of 55 Arnold Place, has been a member of the board since January 1957, when he was named to fill out the unexpired term of John Puppolo.

A slew of people called in to identify the late Robert E. Galipeau, seen here digging up carrots from his Kemp Avenue garden in North Adams on March 19, 1975. Mr. Gallipeau served 37 years with the city's water department, retiring as superintendent in 1983. A past commander of the American Legion in North Adams, he was instrumental in reviving the post's baseball team.
