NORTH ADAMS -- Rudolph Benedetti, physical education teacher in city schools, has been reappointed to the Recreation Commission for a five-year term. Mr. Benedetti, of 55 Arnold Place, has been a member of the board since January 1957, when he was named to fill out the unexpired term of John Puppolo.

ADAMS -- Patrolman John Szymanski of the Adams Police Department will go to Framingham Monday for a four weeks' special course at a school conducted there by the State Police. He will be the fourth member of the local department to attend such a school. Patrolman Gino Balardini completed the course last month. Capt. John Tarsa and Patrolman John Soderstrom were graduates of the school last year.

ADAMS -- Three more candidates have taken out nomination papers for the June 27 special election for selectman. Ruth Champagne of 12 Marshall Ave., Gregory Trottier of 57 Temple St., and Raymond Koza joined Francis Pikul and Joseph Lefebvre Jr. in the race to fill the one year remaining in Gary Shepard's term.

children's tour at North Adams Regional Hospital for writing award winning essays entitled "What Happens When You Go to the Hospital?" The winners were Shelby Sanders, Williamstown Public School; Rebecca Miller, Gabriel Abbott School; Jill Pasquini, Cheshire School; Negin Hajizadeh, East School; Graham Muldowney, St. Stanislaus; Amy Batchelder, Clarksburg School; Jonathan Elder, Mitchell School; Nathaniel Tracy, Readsboro School; and Stephanie Chapman, Pine Cobble.

NORTH ADAMS -- Six members of the Conte Wrestling Club took home medals from the Mt. Anthony Freestyle Wrestling Tournament in Bennington, Vt. Seventh-grader Leroy Johnson was the club's lone medalist with a first-place finish at 81 pounds. Second-place silver medals were earned by eighth graders Chris Peters at 165 pounds and Mike Canavan at 155 pounds and by seventh-grader Kyle Danforth at 85 pounds. Sixth-grader Kevin Lemieux earned a third-place medal at 85 pounds, while seventh-grader Steven Stanley earned a bronze medal at 95 pounds.

NORTH ADAMS -- Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Roy Soucie, a 1996 graduate of Drury High School, departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked aboard the ships of the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group in March. He joined the Navy in July 1996.
