Coach: Matthew Barlin (2nd year)
Last year: 0-11
Key returnees: Austin Segala, Sr.; Robert Ferriter, Sr.; Ryan Meehan, So.
The Hornets have nowhere to go but up this season. The 2012 campaign finished with a "0" in the win column, but that hasn't dampened spirits in early practice sessions.
Barlin says the team is eager and excited for the new season. The team spent the first few days at the driving range, working on form and technique. Monday was their first day on the course at Forest Park, and Barlin said the returning players seemed to pick up where they left off at the end of 2012.
The aspect of the game the coach said he wants to see his players improve most is their iron play, and that would go a long way toward erasing the zero from the win column.
Three returnees -- Austin Segala, Robert Ferriter and Ryan Meehan -- seem a lock for a starting spot. Six others will be vying for one of the other slots. Of the remaining six golfers, five are underclassmen. Senior Mitch Malloy is the only other upperclassman.
The youthful nature of the squad is perhaps their most obvious weakness. Barlin said they're still learning. The positive side to a youthful team is the future, and that foundation is being built right now.
McCann plays in the PVIAC league, which uses a modified version of match play.
Each player's match is worth four points, one for winning each three-hole stretch and one for winning two of those three stretches.
